Chevrolet Malibu Eco Saves Gas with Fuel-Efficient Technology

Giving up that cup of coffee for your commute because the cost of filling your gas tank just went up again?
Not everyone is. Chevrolet Malibu Eco owners are well positioned to weather seasonal increases in fuel prices because the car features fuel-saving technologies that could help pay for their java fix.

One such solution is literally at their fingertips. Chevy’s most fuel-efficient midsize sedan ever features electric power assist steering, which helps to improve fuel economy by up to 2.5 percent compared to conventional hydraulic steering systems. This can help customers save approximately 12 gallons annually, or about 120 gallons in a 10-year life. At $4 per gallon, that saves about $50 per year or $500 in 10 years.

Electric power assist steering operates on demand, consuming power only during steering maneuvers instead of constantly draining engine power to operate a hydraulic pump. It also reduces CO₂ emissions and maintenance cost by eliminating the need to dispose of hydraulic fluid.

The system constantly measures the driver’s steering input, adapts to changing road conditions, and helps compensate for slight directional shifts caused by factors such as uneven road surfaces or crosswinds. It also makes low-speed parking maneuvers feel practically effortless, delivers a higher degree of steering feel at higher speeds, and can be tuned to various driving modes, such as “comfort” and “sport” in some models. It even helps reduce vibrations that transfer through the steering wheel.

“Electric power assist steering is just one example of how a system improvement can deliver not one but several benefits for customers,” said Mark Meyers, General Motors global vehicle performance manager. “By the end of the 2013 model year, more than half of all Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC vehicles will have electric power assist steering.”

Chevrolet Malibu Eco achieves an EPA-estimated 25 miles per gallon city and 37 mpg highway fuel economy.

It features GM’s fuel-saving eAssist technology that shuts down fuel delivery in certain deceleration conditions, further improving fuel economy. While in fuel shut-off mode, the motor-generator unit continues spinning along with the engine to provide immediate and smooth take-off power when the driver presses on the accelerator. As the vehicle comes to a stop, the motor-generator unit positions it properly for a smooth restart when the brake is released. The system also captures up to 15kW of energy that would be normally lost during braking and uses it to recharge the lithium-ion battery.

Because of electric power assist steering, eAssist, and other fuel-saving technologies, Malibu Eco can travel up to 580 highway miles (965 km) between fill-ups with a 15.8-gallon (59.9 liters) fuel tank. eAssist saves customers an estimated $1,950 in annual fuel costs or about $19,500 over 10 years.

Malibu Eco is on sale now and is priced at $25,595, less than competitor full hybrid vehicles. Chevrolet is scheduled to roll-out an all-new fuel-efficient 2.5L Ecotec engine on the full Malibu lineup this summer. A new turbo model will be available this fall. All Malibu models will come with electric power steering standard.

“There is no silver bullet for improving fuel efficiency,” Meyers said. “It’s the many small improvements like electric power assist steering, as seen on the new Malibu that contribute to significant savings for our customers.”

The total transformation of the Chevrolet passenger car lineup advances with the debut of the all-new 2014 Impala full-size sedan at the New York International Auto Show next month. Chevy Sonic Turbo Now Available with 6 Speed Automatic

General Motors's Chevrolet Sonic has a new fuel-efficient Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine that will now be available in either manual or automatic transmission, bringing the increased torque of turbocharging to drivers of automatics.

“Providing the option of a turbocharged engine to our non-stick driving Chevy customers allows us to offer everyone the thrill and power of a fuel-efficient Ecotec 1.4L powerplant,” said Jim Danahy, vehicle line director and vehicle chief engineer for North American small cars. “Both in the Sonic and Cruze, the engine enables better fuel economy without sacrificing power or performance. It’s really a winning combination.”

Chevrolet Sonic’s Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine and six-speed manual transmission achieved a 0-to-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds, according to independent AMCI testing – faster than the comparable 2012 Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent. The Sonic with the turbo-automatic combination went from 0 to 60 in about eight seconds.

“Traditionally, turbocharging was used to enhance the performance of engines, but today it is as much about fuel economy as a 0-to-60 time,” said Bob Benedict, assistant chief engineer for the Ecotec 1.4L engine. “The turbocharger provides high-pressure airflow for high torque to boost the vehicle and give the driver a fun driving experience with improved fuel efficiency.”

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic Ecotec 1.4L turbo six-speed automatic delivers an EPA-estimated 37 mpg highway and 27 mpg in the city, while the manual gets 40 mpg on the highway and 29 in the city.

CHEVY VOLT BECOMES THE NEW MPG KING

When it came to hybrid gas mileage, nothing could beat Toyota’s Prius. Hybrid cars from Honda and BMW are cool in body-line, but Prius was way ahead when mileage was considered. However, according to recent EPA rating, the Chevrolet Volt has eclipsed the hybrid king Prius with an estimated 60 mpg rating.

The main issue with new hybrid or EVs is that most car buyers are unaware of the technology that works behind the vehicle. By creating fuel economy rating, EPA hopes to sort out this problem.

EPA’s fuel economy ratings will represent battery-only, gas-only, or a gas and battery combination. For Chevy’s Volt, the familiar black and white sticker will display that car can get a mpg-e equivalent to 93 mpg and 37 mpg from the gas motor.

Chevrolet COPO Camaro Goes to Production

Bale Chevrolet is excited to inform that Chevrolet will build 69 COPO Camaros for 2012, the brand’s first purpose-built Camaro drag-racing specialty car designed to compete with the quickest in NHRA’s Stock Eliminator and Super Stock classes. National records for quarter-mile times in these contests are in the nine-second range.

As such, the COPO Camaros are expected to be the quickest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet.

“The COPO Camaro is going to shake up the sportsman drag racing ranks this summer and give Chevy fans a great new reason to cheer on the Bowtie,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles & Motorsports. “COPO builds off the strengths that have made the Camaro the best-selling sports car in America. And while it was developed strictly for the drag strip, the COPO Camaro is infused with the same performance pedigree that every Camaro shares.”

The 69-car production for the 2012 COPO Camaro matches the number of “ZL-1” COPO Camaros made in 1969. COPO stands for Central Office Production Order and was Chevrolet’s special-order system in used by dealers to build high-performance models in the 1960s.

The new COPO Camaros will be built using factory “body-in-white” body structures produced at the Oshawa, Ontario plant that manufactures regular-production Camaros. They are the same body-in-white body shells available to all racers under Chevrolet Performance part number 19243374.

Customers will order and complete the transaction for their COPO Camaro at their preferred Chevrolet dealer with delivery at the General Motors Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich.

Deliveries will begin early this summer.

Highlights of the new COPO Camaro program include:

-A sequenced build number matched to the engine but sold without a Vehicle Identification Number and cannot be registered for highway use

-Three racing-class engine are available, including a naturally aspirated 427 (7.0L) and two supercharged 327 (5.3L) V-8 engines

-Engine assembly at GM’s Performance Build Center, where the buyer can opt to participate in the engine assembly similar to Chevrolet’s Corvette Engine Build Experience and the Chevrolet Performance Build -Your Own Crate Engine programs

-Engines pairing with a Powerglide automatic transmission designed for drag racing

-Five colors: Flat Black, Summit White, Victory Red, Silver Ice Metallic and Ashen Gray Metallic

-A special collector’s package offering the purchase of all three engines with the COPO Camaro – including one installed in the car at delivery – with each engine serial number matched to the car

Selection process

The COPO Camaro concept was first shown at the 2011 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, where the overwhelming response by more than 2,000 racing enthusiasts shaped the decision to produce a limited number of COPO Camaros.

To ensure fair access to the limited number of COPO Camaros, an independent third party was used to identify the first individuals who would be offered the opportunity to buy one of the new COPO Camaros. Those selected will receive a confirmation letter with instructions on how to fulfill the purchase contract, choose the engine option for their intended racing class, and take delivery.

Designed to win

The COPO Camaro is designed to NHRA racing specifications including a solid axle and a full chrome moly roll cage. Inside, most of the standard sound deadening and power accessories have been deleted in order to optimize weight for NHRA racing. Also included is a pair of racing bucket seats (no rear seat), a safety harness for the driver, a competition floor shifter and Chevrolet Performance gauges.

The three engines offered in the COPO Camaro program were developed to align with the top classes in NHRA’s various Stock Eliminator and Super Stock ranks. They are:

-An LS7-based naturally aspirated 427 (7.0L) V-8

-A supercharged, LSX-based 327 (5.3L) V-8 featuring a 2.9L supercharger

-A supercharged, LSX-based 327 (5.3L) V-8 featuring a 4.0L supercharger

The 2012 COPO Camaro is being offered as a performance part, with a specific part number (P/N 20129562). It cannot be registered, titled, licensed, or driven on public roads or highways. COPO is specifically offered for off-highway, competitive NHRA use only.

Chevolet Camaro ZL1 Automatic - Faster TapShift

When the new 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 arrives this spring, performance car enthusiasts will experience the hands-on driving satisfaction of a “stick” with the ease of an automatic transmission due to General Motors’ newly improved TapShift technology.

Since its introduction several years ago, TapShift has allowed drivers to control up- and down-shifts with paddle shifters. For 2012, GM powertrain engineers implemented a patent-pending software algorithm that improves tap response time by up to 60 percent compared to the previous system. No hardware changes were required for the upgrade.

“The faster you can get to the next gear, the better, and from the sound of it, the ZL1 automatic’s performance is going to make paddle shifting more exhilarating and satisfying for drivers of all skill sets,” said Eric Fedewa , director of Global Powertrain Forecasting at IHS Automotive. “We’re seeing a trend toward more manual-mode-capable, fun-to-drive automatic transmissions across all vehicle segments, and GM’s technology is leading the pack.”

The 2012 Camaro ZL1’s six-speed automatic transmission delivers a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds – a tenth of a second faster than the manual transmission time.

By staging hydraulic pressure in the clutch for the next gear, the new control module algorithm reduces tap delay for the 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, and 4-5 up-shifts by 200-300 milliseconds. The system anticipates shift requests based on current gear, throttle, torque and speed. By pre-filling the clutch for the next gear, the tap up-shift response is near instantaneous.

“As great as the previous system’s performance was, we were driven to achieve even better results,” said Gabe Gibson, GM performance car calibration engineer. “Not only did we make the upgrade to Camaro, we implemented it on the 2012 Corvette as well, and will use it on all vehicles with TapShift control going forward.”

Staged up-shifts will help drivers of the 2012 Camaro ZL1 – the most powerful production Camaro ever – get the most out of its supercharged 6.2L engine that is SAE-rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft. of torque (754 Nm).

Camaro ZL1 customers’ choice of an automatic 6L90 transmission with TapShift manual mode or a six-speed manual transmission is unmatched in its class. With 0 to 60 taking 3.9 seconds, and a top speed of 184 mph, the power and acceleration of the ZL1 automatic rivals many supercars.

“We think Camaro drivers will really appreciate the performance improvement offered by staged up-shifts, whether they’re merging onto the freeway or putting their ZL1 through its paces at the track,” Gibson said.

The Camaro ZL1 Coupe will go on sale this spring as a 2012 model. The Camaro ZL1 Convertible will go on sale this summer as a 2013 model. Chevrolet expects the automatic transmission to command up to 50 percent of ZL1 sales.

2012 Chevrolet Volt Cleared for Carpool Lanes

A low emission model of the 2012 Chevrolet Volt electric car are on their way to California, where customers will qualify for a $1,500 state rebate and be allowed to drive solo in the state’s carpool lanes.

Chevy Volts with the Low Emissions Package, which is standard for California, began shipping from the General Motors Detroit-Hamtramck plant this week and should begin arriving at the more than 140 participating Chevy dealerships in California before the end of the month.

"The Volts with the Low Emissions Package are certain to be a strong draw for California commuters looking to travel the state’s notoriously congested freeways in the carpool lane,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing.

Commuters who use carpool lanes in Southern California save an estimated average 36 minutes a day, or about a third of their total driving time.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is making 40,000 Clean Air Stickers available for registered vehicles that meet the state’s emissions standards. Applications can be downloaded from the DMV’s web site at www.dmv.ca.gov

Additionally, the new Low Emissions Package makes the 2012 Chevrolet Volt eligible for owners and lessees to receive up to $1,500 in state rebates through the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project. This incentive is in addition to a federal tax credit of up to $7,500 Clean vehicle rebate applications can be submitted online at www.energycenter.org

California has more than 1,400 miles of High Occupancy Vehicle lanes. Originally restricted to vehicles with two or more occupants to help minimize congestion, the lanes are now open to single occupancy use by owners of advanced, low-emission vehicles. Chevrolet Volts registered in Georgia, New York and Florida also are eligible for single occupancy access to carpool lanes.

The 2012 Chevrolet Volt has a total driving range of up to 379 miles, based on EPA estimates. For the first 35 miles, the Volt can drive gas-and tailpipe-emissions-free using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 344 miles on a full tank. Volt owners have travelled more than 10 million miles since the vehicle launched late last year. Roughly two-thirds of those miles were powered by grid electricity.

Chevrolet Sonic - Extreme Testing

There are miles and then there are “Seth miles.” Both measure 5,280 feet, but a “Seth mile” is different. More extreme. More grueling. More punishing. All that rigor is part of the durability story of the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic.

“Seth miles” are named for Chevrolet Sonic Quality Manager Seth Valentine. Each mile Valentine puts on a test vehicle is called a “Seth mile” by Sonic engineers because of his reputation for extreme testing on long road trips. Valentine’s duty: Make the Sonic the most reliable and durable small car in North America.

The efforts are paying off as Sonic more than doubled the sales of its predecessor, the Chevrolet Aveo, in January. Chevrolet Sonic is the only subcompact built in the United States.

Over one six-week period, Valentine drove more than 14,000 miles in the first Sonic to leave the General Motors Orion (Mich.) Assembly Plant. Valentine drove Sonic Vehicle Identification No. 1 from north to south and east to west, across subtropical Florida, the arid deserts of Arizona, the mountains of Colorado, and the South Carolina low country.

In addition to amassing miles with other Chevrolet Sonic team members, Valentine would play typical consumer and pack the Sonic to the hilt for a family vacation.

During work trips, Valentine and his colleagues identified quality issues that needed fixed before Chevrolet Sonics were shipped to Chevrolet dealers across the nation. One lengthy journey from the assembly plant outside Detroit to Phoenix revealed an intense wind noise while traveling through a 40 mph crosswind in Texas. The wind noise was not a factor during testing at the GM Proving Ground in Milford, Mich. Valentine called the assembly plant from the road and had the problem fixed before VIN No. 2 left the factory. He took the same approach with other issues found on the road.

“ I do test drives because I want to experience everything a customer could: low altitude, high altitude, high temperatures and low temperatures, ” said Valentine. “ In the course of one week I can go from below sea level at 120 degrees F to below freezing temperatures at 12,000 feet above sea level. We can experience everything the customer might experience. ”

The Chevrolet Sonic comes with a 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, 40,000 miles more than most competing small car powertrain warranties. It is the only small car manufactured in the United States.

Chevrolet to Debut Five New Ads on Super Bowl Sunday

Chevrolet is going big on Super Bowl Sunday with five new ads, including a first-of-its-kind music video with the new Sonic subcompact and the band OK Go.

“ The Super Bowl is a huge opportunity for Chevrolet to connect with millions of consumers – before, during and after the game – with our ads and digital extensions,” said Joel Ewanick, global chief marketing officer, General Motors. “At the core of our efforts are great Chevrolet cars and trucks.”

“The Sonic and OK Go partnership is the perfect match-up of an innovative small car with a band known for its unique videos and musical interpretations,” said Ewanick. “The Sonic was built to be fun to drive and the ‘Needing/Getting’ music video highlights its agility, power, and spaciousness.”

In the music video, the four members of OK Go are shown in a specially equipped Sonic, driving through a race course lined with musical instruments and other homemade sound-generating objects. The car is used to play the instruments along the route with devices attached to the body panels, as well as to the wheels and tires. The sounds generated along the course make up the music in the song.

“We always strive to find a new path with our music and our videos, so it’s really great to partner with a company like Chevrolet that is willing to push boundaries to connect with their audience, too,” said Damian Kulash, Jr., lead vocalist for OK Go. “They gave us free reign to indulge our deep-seated stunt driving fantasies and we’re thrilled that they liked the results enough to incorporate our video into their Super Bowl plans.”

In addition to the music video, Chevrolet will debut two other ads for the Sonic and one each for the Volt electric vehicle with extended range and Silverado full-size pickup . Chevrolet has a strong digital presence during the Super Bowl with a number of initiatives including the first-of-its-kind Chevy Game Time app , which allows viewers of Super Bowl XLVI to play trivia, interact with each other via Twitter, participate in polls and possibly win one of 20 Chevrolets or thousands of other prizes. The app has been downloaded more than 300,000 times since it was made available during the NFL’s NFC Championship game.

As an avid sport fisherman, General Motors development engineer Frank Delekta enjoys the peace, quiet and tranquility of Michigan lakes and streams. His sense for silence – and the use of advanced technology – served him and his team well in their mission to bring luxury-like interior quietness to the Chevrolet Cruze.

Chevrolet's engineering team used a number of noise-reducing and noise-cancelling technologies on the Chevrolet Cruze body structure, including 30 distinct acoustical treatments. For example, the acoustic package on the Chevrolet Cruze is a Liquid Applied Sound Deadener applied strategically throughout the body structure and melted into place when the body passes through the paint oven.

The doors have triple seals and feature fiberglass “blankets” that serve as water, airflow and noise barriers. They close with a solid, precise sound and no resonance . Before devising these solutions and many more, engineers performed intensive testing throughout the vehicle’s development.

Delekta and his colleagues have significantly sharpened their hearing skills because of their years of experience working in GM’s Squeak and Rattle Lab at the Milford (Mich.) Proving Ground.

“I have a pretty acute sense of hearing,” said Delekta. “Outside of work, if I ask someone ‘Did you hear that?’ the answer is almost always ‘No.’ I hear noises that others don’t.”

Delekta’s team leveraged Chevrolet’s design and engineering talent in North America, Asia and Europe, all regions where the Cruze is sold. Engineers reported on noises they heard while driving across a variety of real-world roads at various speeds. The team replicated those conditions in the lab to find the source of the noise. Among the tools was a state-of-the art environmental four-post simulator that mimics the world’s most-challenging road surfaces.

This intense testing allowed engineers to adjust for interior compartment noise early in the vehicle development process.

And the team didn’t just beat up the Chevrolet Cruze at room temperature. Test vehicles were put into a climatic anechoic chamber to evaluate the sounds that can emerge at extreme temperatures – from minus 20 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the same day.

“A component may squeak or rattle at 100 degrees but not below freezing or vice versa,” said Delekta. The brutal road and lab testing led to improvements in 74 components resulting in a quieter ride.

One of these was traced to the audio system itself. A nasty rattle from the rear deck lid was traced to bigger speakers capable of pumping out more volume for decibel-hungry North Americans. Engineers used an attachment clip to stabilize the panel that houses the rear deck lid speakers, eliminating the sound. The clip also allows for better audio fidelity through Chevrolet Cruze’s optional Pioneer premium speaker system.

100 years history of care, love, and hope wrapped in new website for Arkansas Children’s Hospital

Arkansas Children’s Hospital has just completed 100 years of its service and in celebration a new website has been launched. The new website not only caters information about the hospital to patients, but it also depicts the journey of the hospital from its initial days of inception. The website reflects every major milestone the hospital has achieved, from its start as an orphanage for underprivileged children to present day hospital, loved by millions of well wishers

"We wanted to share with the people of Arkansas the rich history of care, love and hope that's been shared with kids across the state for the past 100 years," says Dan McFadden with ACH. "Lot of history and things that people just may not even be aware of."

For example, the Burn Center of the hospital was opened on February 24, 1953, which was the first of its kind in the state. The first patient to be treated in the hospital was a 12-year old girl with third degree burn over half her body.

The website also has a picture gallery. Each of the pictures tells the story of the hospital’s journey and the different milestones achieved over the years.

The Arkansas Children's Hospital Foundation (ACHF) is made up of people dedicated to bringing hope and health to sick and injured children in Arkansas and beyond. 2012 Chevrolet Sonic Get Top Safety Rating

Bale Chevrolet in Little Rock, Arkansas is pleased to announce that the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic received a 5-star overall vehicle score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Chevrolet Sonic vehicle was tested under NHTSA’s revised New Car Assessment Program implemented starting with the 2011 model year. The Sonic brings to 10 the number of General Motors 2012 models with 5-star overall vehicle scores for safety.

The overall rating is based on frontal and side crash tests in addition to rollover resistance testing. The three test conditions are combined mathematically into an “Overall Vehicle Score.”

Chevrolet Sonic achieved an overall vehicle score of 5 stars – the highest rating possible – even though Sonic received four stars for rollover. NHTSA applies the results for the Sonic sedan to the 5-door hatchback model because of the same safety equipment and performance

“ We developed Sonic to exceed customer expectations of subcompacts in terms of segment-leading safety features,” said Gay Kent, General Motors executive director of vehicle safety. “From the largest vehicles in our lineup to the smallest, we are putting overall crashworthiness and state-of-the-art safety technologies at the top of the list of must-haves.”

The Chevrolet Sonic is designed to help drivers avoid crashes, while protecting occupants in a crash. Chevrolet Sonic offers an exceptionally strong body structure through the incorporation of a single welded side ring unit and more than 60 percent of the vehicle safety cage consisting of high-strength steel. Other standard safety features include:

-Driver and front passenger dual-stage frontal air bags, seat-mounted side pelvic/thorax air bags, knee air bags and head curtain side air bags with rollover protection that cover front and outboard rear seating rows. -The Chevrolet Sonic also has side impact air bags in the outboard rear seating positions for a total of ten standard air bags.

-Rollover sensors, which can activate the head-curtain side air bags if sensors determine an imminent rollover. In a rollover, the air bags stay inflated longer to provide increased occupant protection.

-Front safety belt pretensioners to reduce forward occupant movement and load-limiting retractors to help manage forces during a collision

-OnStar, which features the Automatic Crash Response System that uses GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in the event that a crash is detected.

Starting with 2011 models, NHTSA introduced tougher tests and more rigorous requirements for its 5-star ratings that provide more information about safety feature performance and crash-avoidance technologies. Changes included a new side pole test simulating a 20-mph side-impact crash into a 10-inch-diameter pole or tree at a 75-degree angle just behind the A-pillar on the driver’s side.

Chevy Malibu is Longest-Running Midsize Nameplate

From hot rod to police cruiser to convertible to America’s main street midsize sedan, few midsize cars have appealed to so many, for so long, as the Chevy Malibu.

The Malibu is the automotive industry’s longest-running midsize nameplate, spanning 35 years and eight generations. Chevrolet has produced more than 8.5 million Malibus in the United States since its debut in 1964.

Introduced as the top model of the Chevrolet Chevelle midsize car line, Malibu’s combination of sporty design, enhanced trim and high level of standard equipment quickly established Malibu, with 200,000 total sales in its first year. From 1964 to 1967, Malibu was available in a full range of body styles including two-door hardtops, two-door convertibles, four-door sedans and station wagons.

In its debut year, the Malibu lineup included the now-legendary 300-horsepower, 327-cubic-inch V-8 Malibu SS coupe and convertible; the following year introduced a more powerful 350-horsepower, 327-cubic-inch small-block. The Malibu SS Z16 package, available only in the hardtop model, featured Malibu’s first big-block engine – a 396-cubic-inch, 375-horsepower power plant.

For the 1966 model year, the Malibu SS was replaced by the SS396. This new model came with a heavy-duty suspension and other performance upgrades. The 396 V-8 was available in 325-, 360- and 375-horsepower versions.

The Malibu was significantly redesigned for the 1968 model year when fastback styling overtook the industry. This second generation of Malibus continued with the front-engine and rear-wheel-drive layout, but used different wheelbases for two-door and four-door models.

Chevrolet introduced a third generation of Chevelles, including a Malibu, in 1973, which would continue through 1977. The Malibu was available in coupe, sedan and wagon configurations. The Chevy Malibu SS package was available on all body styles including the wagon. In 1974, the Malibu became the entry-level Chevelle model.

The third-generation Malibu also was successful in NASCAR. The 1973-1977 body was aerodynamic and amassed 25 winner’s circle appearances for Chevrolet drivers Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip and Benny Parsons.

A smaller Malibu debuted in 1978, responding to a a growing focus on fuel economy demands, yet retained contemporary styling and features. The Malibu’s first era of rear-wheel-drive cars ended after the 1983 model year, and an all-new generation of front-wheel-drive midsize cars was introduced in 1997 – following a 14-year production hiatus.

Malibu was reborn as a four-door sedan with a four-cylinder, 150-horsepower (112 kW) and a V-6 with 155 horsepower (115 kW). Malibu quickly earned a reputation as a well-built, value-driven sedan designed to take on established midsize leaders. It also earned Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award for 1997.

A sixth-generation Malibu debuted for the 2004 model year in four-door sedan and extended sedan versions with Ecotec four-cylinder and V-6 engines. It again garnered awards and recommendations from automotive media, independent research groups and safety advocates. The Malibu topped its segment in the 2005 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study. In 2006, the Malibu SS model was reintroduced with a 240-horsepower (179 kW) V-6 with more aggressive-looking front and rear fascias, 18-inch wheels and sport bucket seats.

In 2007, Chevy launched a seventh-generation Malibu for the 2008 model year. It became one of the division’s most highly decorated vehicles, earning more than 40 automotive industry honors, including the 2008 North American Car of the Year.

The Malibu was Chevrolet’s – and General Motors’ – best-selling passenger car in 2010, with nearly 200,000 cars (198,770) sold. The Malibu is the industry’s only midsize car to win the Consumers Digest Automotive “Best Buy” award the past three years – 2011, 2010 and 2009. It has also been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the past two years (2010 and 2011). Malibu helped Chevrolet increase market share by two percentage points within the mid-car segment from just under 7 percent in 2008 to nearly 9 percent in 2010.

The all-new 2013 Malibu is Chevrolet’s eighth-generation Malibu and first global midsize for customers in nearly 100 markets on six continents. It will serve as Chevrolet’s flagship vehicle in many parts of the world including China, Korea, Europe, Australia and more. The Malibu is designed to stand out around the world with a roomy, quiet and upscale interior. Its ride and handling are expected to challenge the best cars in the midsize category. The new Malibu will be built in China, Korea and two locations in the United States. University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has just become the only adult hospital in Arkansas to have its echocardiography service accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL).

The accreditation will give each of the lab’s 500 patients a month the assurance that their echo procedures are performed at the highest standard that has been set by ICAEL with proper level of analysis.

Echocardiogram provides images of the heart using ultrasound or sonography. The department of Noninvasive Laboratory received this much coveted accreditation in three different areas that include adult transthoracic, adult transesophageal, and adult stress test.

All credit for the accreditation effort is due to Ibrahim Fahdi, M.D., director of the UAMS Cardiac Noninvasive Laboratory and associate professor of medicine in the UAMS College of Medicine. Fahdi mentioned that the accreditation process required extra training of the lab’s sonographers. After this accreditation, there will be regular audits by the ICAEL and internal peer review of the imaging and cardiologists’ analyses of patients’ echocardiograms.

“There is no doubt that UAMS is the place to go when one needs a careful and thoughtful cardiac diagnosis. I am delighted and proud that our echocardiography lab is first in the state with this accreditation, “said James D. Marsh M.D, the chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine in the College of Medicine.

The revolutionary Voltec propulsion system in the Volt delivers between 25 and 50 miles of electric driving with a long-life, 16-kWh lithium-ion battery and 149-hp electric drive unit which offers 344 miles of extended range with a 1.4L engine. In winter, the Volt yields 28 miles on average electric-only driving. On a regular basis, the Volt delivers 39 miles and one can get 40-45 mph on rural roads.

On short trips, the Volt runs on electricity alone. Since it is a plug-in car, it takes four hours to recharge using a 240-volt charger and about nine hours using 110-volt household outlet. GM to Invest $2 Billion in U.S. Plants, Adding 4,000 Jobs
